What is The Community Foundation of Greater Decatur, Inc.?

Like all community foundations, we are a tax-exempt public charity with the stated purpose to support charitable organizations and specific projects that help to improve the quality of life for the residents of the Decatur area. We service the Decatur Metropolitan Statistical Area, including all of Morgan County, Lawrence County (except Bankhead National Forest), and the areas of Decatur in Limestone County. When a person establishes a charitable fund through the Foundation, those assets are combined with other funds and are professionally managed so that the assets grow over time. A volunteer board of community leaders oversees the Foundation’s activities and is responsible for providing grants to local nonprofit organizations or community projects according to your intentions. The Board also is responsible for identifying current and potential challenges and needs facing the community upon which the resources of the Foundation can have a positive impact.

How Does it Work?

Anyone may use the Foundation to give back to the community. Individuals, families, and organizations may establish funds through the Foundation rather than having to undertake setting up and managing their own private foundation. Donors are able to maximize charitable gifts of cash, stock, real estate, or other appreciated assets during their lifetimes and to provide perpetual gifts through endowments. The name of the fund can reflect the name of the donors, the name of the family or business, or a favorite cause. Fund names also can be created as an honorarium or memorial for someone special. Grants are awarded in the fund’s name or can be made anonymously if the donor prefers.
